Anita Roddick's The Body Shop

In 1976, Anita Roddick started a business in the UK selling naturally-scented soaps and lotions called The Body Shop, which was based on a business that was developed in California, USA.

Her intentions originally were just to make enough money for her family to be able to have a comfortable life, but the company grew so quickly that, because it become an international company, her attitudes changed. She now feels it should be possible to run a successful business without having to compromise on her beliefs, and Q. 1) has written a book explaining what she has learnt and how her ideas have developed.

Q. 2) The book explains a little about her life, but it doesn't only discuss that, and in that sense, it is not a normal business book. The message it tries to get across is that to succeed in business you have to be different. Q. 5) She feels that business should be fun, and a business should be run with love and it should do good. Her philosophy is that in business, as in life, Q. 4) she needs to enjoy herself, to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected, and she has always wanted the people who work for her to feel the same way.
